Fairy Godmother / Web Angel Services

It can be difficult to find time to implement all the new tools and ideas you hear about for your website.  The idea behind the Fairy Godmother (also known by some of my clients as my web angel service) website care was to be caring for and provide one-to -one assistance for your websites, be on call/email/text if there is anything you want to have added or changed and to keep your website running in top form.  Keeping your website fresh and up to date makes it a valuable resource for your business.  If your website can be working for you 24/7 and even provide an extra line of income for you -use it!  Its probably already listed on all your business cards – potential clients will look at it!  Some of the recommended ideas for regular maintenance are here:

On the front end, you want your website to be up to date and fresh;

  • Try not to keep past events notifications up for too long after the event, (no-one likes to go to a website and see past events from 6 months ago still there).
  • Use your website!  Most hosting plans that your website is with give you access to so many tools and space.  You can upload documents for your clients there and send them a link or post a link on your website for downloading.  Post a newsletter sign up form to collect email addresses and send out an occasional short email to your subscribers.  Email is still a valuable marketing tool.
  • Use your email accounts.  Hosting services give you unlimited email addresses with your domain name.  When you send out an email with an address of yourname@ yoururl.com if someone wants to know more about you they will check out your url.
  • Collect and post testimonials.  This is an easy and super way to make a connection with potential clients.
  • If you have a facebook or twitter account for your business embed the newsfeed and links on your website.  Its another bridge to connect with potential clients.
  • Sell or advertise products or services.  If you stock a line of products make a page for them on your website along with ways for clients to purchase.  This will help you connect with clients that may be searching online for a local supplier too.  You may also consider writing a blog post/ email newsletter or an article on the page with ideas for using the products once your client has them.
  • Cross promote your friends businesses that are complementary to your own.  Your current clients already trust you and would be interested in your recommendations.

On the back end, you want to be up to date and fresh too;

  • Checking in for WordPress updates and plug-in updates (will display on your control panel) will keep your website in top working order as improvements are rolled out.
  • Reviewing plug-ins and checking for new ones.  New plug-ins are easy to add to your website and can add some amazing functionality to you content.  You can look for them in your control panel under plug-ins.  Always check reviews and screenshots to see if it will be beneficial to your website.
  • Checking comments, if you allow them.  I recommend Aksimet to screen comments and stop spam.  It is a part of the WordPress install but you need to activate it yourself. There are also free plugins from WordPress to stop spam email sign ups.
  • Add new material.  As your business grows, add new pages to your website with your expanded services.  Small photo galleries of events are fun if relevant for your business and you have permission of all involved.
  • Keep your title and tagline of your website up to date as well.  This is can be important for search engine results even if it doesn’t show up on your website.  Go in to Tools/ General settings of you control panel to check them.

..and then there’s your SEO upkeep;
